Google blocks YouTube clip in Egypt and Libya; keeps it online

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - YouTube, the video website owned by Google Inc, said on Wednesday it would not remove a film clip mocking the Islamic Prophet Muhammad that has been blamed for anti-U.S. protests in Egypt and Libya, but it has blocked access to it in those countries.

The clip, based on a longer film, depicts the prophet as a fraud and philanderer and has been blamed for sparking violence at U.S. embassies in Cairo and Benghazi. The U.S. Ambassador to Libya, J. Christopher Stevens, and three other American diplomats were killed in an attack on the U.S. embassy in Benghazi on Tuesday.

"This video - which is widely available on the Web - is clearly within our guidelines and so will stay on YouTube," Google said in a statement. "However, given the very difficult situation in Libya and Egypt, we have temporarily restricted access in both countries. Our hearts are with the families of the people murdered in yesterday's attack in Libya."

The 14-minute clip is a trailer for a film called the "Innocence of Muslims," produced by a man who described himself as a California-based Israeli Jew named Sam Bacile.

Google has generally adopted a hands-off approach to political speech, although its "community guidelines" prohibit "hate speech," including speech that attacks or demeans a group based on religion. The guidelines can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/t/community_guidelines.

"We work hard to create a community everyone can enjoy and which also enables people to express different opinions," Google said in its statement. "This can be a challenge because what's OK in one country can be offensive elsewhere."

In the past, Google has selectively filtered videos that violate local laws.

On Wednesday, Afghanistan's general director of Information Technology at the Ministry of Communications, Aimal Marjan, told Reuters, "We have been told to shut down YouTube to the Afghan public until the video is taken down."

US Open champ Murray hopes 'it's not the only 1'

NEW YORK (AP) ? If it's true, as they say, that the toughest Grand Slam title to win is your first, then Andy Murray was right to feel relief, above all, when he finally got No. 1 out of the way at the U.S. Open.

"I certainly was doubting myself a bit, and thinking about the match and how tough it was going to be, and whether I was going to be able to do it or not," Murray said Tuesday, a day after beating defending champion Novak Djokovic over nearly five hours in the final at Flushing Meadows, "so I'm just glad that I finally managed to do it."

As he spoke those words, Murray stared at his reflection in the shiny silver trophy he so longed for and now had earned, adding: "And I hope it's not the only one."

No reason to believe it will be.

Indeed, with his defensive and returning skills, and a new willingness to be aggressive with his forehand, Murray might very well be considered the man to beat when tennis returns to the Grand Slam scene at the Australian Open in January.

For proof, Murray needs to look no further than his coach, Ivan Lendl.

Until letting a two-set lead against Djokovic evaporate, then mustering all the gumption required to prevail in a fifth, Murray was 0-4 in Grand Slam finals. Only one other man in the Open era, which began in 1968, lost his first four major titles matches. That man, of course, is Lendl, who eventually figured out how win the big one and accumulated eight Grand Slam trophies of his own.

Before Monday's match, Murray and Lendl chatted. Murray was anxious during his warmup in Arthur Ashe Stadium. He was anxious in the locker room.

"He just said to me, when we spoke, 'Just enjoy the match. It's what you work all your life towards, so just enjoy it,'" Murray said. "And I was like, 'Well, that's exactly the problem. I've been working 10 years for this, and it's a big moment for me, so I don't know if I'm going to enjoy it.' And then he was like, 'Oh, why not? You've got to try and enjoy it.' That was kind of how it went."

Looking very much like any 25-year-old might on a day off, in dark jeans and a striped polo shirt, Murray chuckled while recounting that conversation, which offered a tiny taste of his dry wit.

He met with reporters Tuesday while sitting at a wooden dining room table in the Manhattan residence of British Consul-General Danny Lopez. A bagpiper greeted Murray's entrance, a nod to his Scottish homeland. Standing near a lithograph of Queen Elizabeth II by Andy Warhol, Lopez presented Murray with a basket of Scottish treats, including bottles of Irn-Bru, a rust-colored carbonated fruit drink.

Murray clearly recognizes ? how could he not? ? and embraces the significance of his success in Britain, which last could proudly hail a male Grand Slam tennis champion in 1936, when Fred Perry won Wimbledon and the U.S. Championships. It's been a summer of barrier-breaking by Murray, who was the first British man since Bunny Austin in 1938 to even be the runner-up at the All England Club (losing to Roger Federer), then won the singles gold medal at the London Olympics (beating Federer).

"Winning a Grand Slam's been his goal and his dream since he was a very young kid playing tennis. And he's come so close a number of times and not quite made it," said Murray's mother, Judy, who is Britain's Fed Cup captain. "I think winning the Olympic gold gave him the belief that he could do it in a major final. And to see him manage to do it yesterday, after such a tough, brutal match against a great player like Djokovic, was just fantastic. ... Hopefully, it will spur him on to more."

This has not been the easiest era to come along in men's tennis, of course. Federer owns a record 17 Grand Slam titles, Rafael Nadal owns 11, and Djokovic five. Those three guys combined to win 29 of the 30 major tournaments preceding this U.S. Open (Juan Martin del Potro's 2009 victory in New York was the lone exception).

But now here comes Murray, long considered by his peers a sure-thing, champion-to-be who just hadn't managed to figure it all out yet.

Perhaps now he has.

"Andy has been maturing very nicely as a player, as a competitor, as a person," Lendl said. "As you mature, you become more comfortable in these situations. Of course, being in more of these situations, it's very important, and the more of them you're in, the more comfortable you feel."

Lendl speaks from experience.

Murray said he won't know for sure exactly what sort of confidence boost he'll gain from these 15 days at the U.S. Open ? and one particularly engaging victory against a gritty competitor in Djokovic ? until the next time he finds himself on court with so much at stake.

He is certain, though, that he can't wait to find out.

"I want to keep improving. I want to keep trying to win. ... I know, obviously, how good it feels to win a Grand Slam and, obviously, winning the Olympics. I know how hard it was, obviously, losing a Wimbledon final," Murray said on Day 1 of life as a major champion. "You want to try to win those big matches in the big tournaments, and I'll keep working hard to try and do it again."

Jon Super / AP

Containing approximately 1,600 pages with the singer's notations, handwriting and underlining throughout and with Elvis Presley and Holy Bible, embossed in gold on a leather cover, the Bible was given to Elvis Presley by his uncle Vester and Aunt Clettes Presley as a Christmas gift in 1957.

LONDON -- A Bible which once belonged to Elvis Presley and contains his handwritten notes and thoughts has sold for $94,600 (59,000 pounds)?at an auction in England, the auction house said.

The Bible, given to the singer on his first Christmas at his home in Graceland in 1957, was bought by an American man based in Britain, Omega Auctions said on its website.

The religious book, used by Presley until his death on Aug. 16, 1977, was expected to fetch around 25,000 pounds but went for more than double its value.

But a pair of Presley's unwashed and soiled underpants, worn underneath his famous white jumpsuit during a 1977 concert, went unsold.

Bids for the underwear reached 5,000 pounds, but failed to meet the 7,000 pounds reserve price.

Some of the singer's other personal items sold at the auction on Saturday included used cufflinks, a gold pendant chain/necklace and black Flagg Brothers shoes.

15,000 Gold Fields miners strike in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Gold Fields Ltd says a wildcat strike by 15,000 miners has stopped work in the west section of its KDC mine in the West Rand, the latest in a string of labor disputes in South Africa's mines.

Gold Fields said Monday it was not clear why the miners are striking. The east section of the mine is still operating normally.

Meanwhile, miners have not reported for work in the fourth week of a strike at the world's third largest platinum producer though unions report they are preparing to start talks on wage increases with management from Lonmin PLC.

At a second platinum mine, Implats, 15,000-plus workers are demanding a 10 percent pay rise though the mine continues operations.

AP Exclusive: Private school vaccine opt-outs rise

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? Parents who send their children to private schools in California are much more likely to opt out of immunizations than their public school counterparts, an Associated Press analysis has found, and not even the recent re-emergence of whooping cough has halted the downward trajectory of vaccinations among these students.

The state surveys all schools with at least 10 kindergartners to determine how many have all the recommended immunizations. The AP analyzed that data and found the percentage of children in private schools who forego some or all vaccinations is more than two times greater than in public schools.

More troubling to public health officials is that the rate of children entering private schools without all of their shots jumped by 10 percent last year, while the opt-out figures held steady in public schools for the first time since 2004.

Public health officials believe that an immunization rate of at least 90 percent in all communities, including schools, is critical to minimizing the potential for a disease outbreak. About 15 percent of the 1,650 private schools surveyed by the state failed to reach that threshold, compared with 5 percent of public schools.

There were 110 private schools statewide where more than half the kindergartners skipped some or all of their shots, according to AP's analysis, with Highland Hall Waldorf School in Northridge ? where 84 percent opted out ? topping the list.

Parents cite a variety of reasons for not immunizing their children, among them: religious values, concerns the shots themselves could cause illness and a belief that allowing children to get sick helps them to build a stronger immune system. Likewise, there's no single explanation that accounts for why so many more parents who send their children to private schools apparently share a suspicion of immunizations.

Saad Omer, a professor of global health at Emory University in Atlanta who has studied vaccine refusal in private schools, surmised more private school parents are wealthy and have the time to spread five shots over a series of years and stay home should their child get an illness like chickenpox. Neal Halsey, a professor of pediatric infectious diseases at the Johns Hopkins University, said parents who choose private schools are likely to be more skeptical of state requirements and recommendations.

Bibi Reber, whose children attend the Waldorf-inspired Greenwood School in Mill Valley, had her children vaccinated only for what she sees as the deadliest diseases. Greenwood has a 79 percent opt-out rate among its kindergartners.

"I don't think dirt or getting sick makes you a weak person; your immune system needs to work with things," said Reber, whose children attend the Greenwood School in the San Francisco Bay area town of Mill Valley. "We certainly don't want to go back to having polio, but on the other hand, I don't think we need to eradicate all the childhood diseases

Public health officials say that, regardless of why parents choose not to vaccinate their children, the result is the same: an increased risk of an outbreak of whooping cough or other communicable diseases.

"We're very concerned that those schools are places where disease can spread quite rapidly through the school and into the community, should it get introduced," said Dr. Robert Schechter, medical officer with the Immunization Branch of the California Department of Public Health.

That's what prompted the Legislature to approve a bill requiring parents to discuss vaccinations with a pediatricians or a school nurse before they can opt-out. Gov. Jerry Brown has until the end of September to sign or veto it.

State Assemblyman Richard Pan, a pediatrician, who sponsored the bill, said he believes private school parents are more apt to mistakenly believe that the vaccinations themselves could be more dangerous than the diseases.

"In private school, these are people who have money, who are upper middle-class, and they are going on the Internet and seeing information and misinformation," said Pan, D-Sacramento.

Increasing immunization rates for this population is critical to controlling the outbreak of diseases, he said. "Have you ever seen a child cough themselves to death? It's not pleasant," he said.

Those who choose not to vaccinate their children see the legislation as meddlesome and unnecessary.

"It's making an extra appointment and paying extra money to go in there and essentially get permission to do what I feel is right for my family," said Dawn Kelly, who sends her unvaccinated 5-year-old son and partially vaccinated 9-year-old son to Monarch Christian School in the Los Angeles area.

Like many parents who refuse some or all immunization shots, Kelly worries her children's immune system could be overwhelmed by getting too many vaccines at once.

Melani Gold Friedman, president of the parent association at Highland Hall Waldorf School, is concerned with what the legislation means for families who normally consult with acupuncturists, holistic healers or other alternative practitioners.

"The bill has an assumption that everyone's seeing one particular kind of doctor, but the people who are opting out, chances are they're not seeing that kind of doctor," she said.

Vaccination opt-out rates nationwide have been creeping up since the mid-2000s, spurred in part by the belief the battery of vaccinations routinely given to infants could lead to autism. Several major studies have discredited that idea.

Parents are allowed to forego vaccines for philosophical reasons in California and 19 other states. Of those, only Washington requires parents to consult with a physician. And, in California, there's no difference between private and public schools when it comes to what's required for parents to opt out ? they simply sign a document. The state recommends that kindergarteners receive five vaccine progressions, including protections against Polio, Hepatitis B and Measles

Politicians and public health experts across the nation are focusing more attention on childhood immunizations, driven by a re-emergence of diseases like whooping cough. The U.S. is in the midst of what could be its worst year for that disease in more than five decades, with nearly 25,000 cases and 13 deaths.

After whooping cough reached epidemic levels in California in 2010, the state took action, embarking on a public information campaign and increasing the availability of vaccines. A law was passed requiring booster shots for older students.

Yet the opt-out rate continued climbing in private schools. It's more than doubled since 2004, to 2,228 kindergartners in last year's state survey. While the overall rate of full immunization among kindergarteners hovers around 91 percent, places where the opt-out rate is greater could pose a risk for outbreak.

In 2008, East Bay Waldorf School in El Sobrante closed temporarily after whooping cough sickened more than a dozen students, eight of them kindergartners. The San Francisco Bay Area school had a vaccination rate of less than 50 percent.

State health officials are tracking the divergence of opt-out rates in private and public schools, but are not planning any studies or outreach efforts targeting this pupil population. The state is conducting a general education campaign to boost vaccinate rates.

The AP analysis found 20 of the 25 California private schools with the highest opt-out rates are "Waldorf schools," a loose association of institutions founded on the teachings of 19th-century philosopher Rudolf Steiner. He favored a holistic approach to education and medicine and thought childhood illnesses could be beneficial.

Officials at these schools would not comment about Pan's bill but say they trust parents to make the best decisions for their children's health.

"Parents who are brave enough to say, 'No, that's not the right thing,' should be supported," said Patrice Maynard, spokeswoman for the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America.
