First Person: In This Presidential Election, a House Divided Can Stand

Yahoo News asked voters in politically split relationships to share what it's like to support one presidential candidate when their significant others don't. Here's one voter's story.

FIRST PERSON | If only there was a support group for people like me: "Hi, my name is Margaret and I'm married to a Republican."

I will be voting for Barack Obama in this election, and my husband, Stephen, will be voting for Romney. Stephen and I are in our early 50s, have been married for 25 years and have four children. You don't get to stay together that long without learning to respect and deal with differences. We've never been one of those couples who agree on everything. We even have a rule that if we both see something for our house that we both love, we have to buy it because it happens so rarely. So politics is not our only area of disagreement, but it's definitely a big one.

It wasn't always this way. I remember fondly those days before the 2000 election when there was a grayscale of political opinion and you weren't just "red" or "blue." Stephen and I actually used to discuss issues and even came to some common ground.

Much like the rest of the country, since 2000, the divide between our political opinions is deeper. I avoid conflict whenever possible and Stephen runs headlong into it. He still tries to lure me into political debates, but they always devolve into personal arguments with one of us with calling the other an idiot. In order to keep the peace, politics are pretty much off the table for discussion except in the most glancing of ways -- hair styles and gaffes are OK; economics and the Middle East are not. It doesn't help that we live in a conservative suburb of Atlanta. I'm outnumbered, and I've learned to keep my mouth shut.

We have learned to enjoy the election as if it were a reality TV show. We enjoy watching the debates together. We laugh at mistakes and mannerisms, call both candidates out when they dodge questions, and keep track of points. We can assess each candidate's performance without getting into the substance of their differences. We are not going to change each other's mind about what's best for the country, so it's pointless to try.

Come Election Day, one of us will get a conciliatory hug and the other will discreetly close themselves in the closet and do a happy dance.

FORTUNE? -- The good economic news is in: After the unemployment rate dipped below 8%, it seems consumers are feeling better about their prospects. They spent more than most economists expected in September -- retail sales rose 1.1% from the previous month, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday. Though this signals that retailers in 2012 could certainly end on a high note, it doesn't necessarily mean consumer spending (which makes up two-thirds of the U.S. economy) has turned the corner. Here are three reasons why.

Higher gas prices ? The impressive retail bump might suggest consumers are feeling better about the economy. They spent more on big-ticket items, such as automobiles and iPhone 5s, but the rise was also largely driven by higher gas prices. Receipts at gas stations rose by 2.5%, reflecting higher prices paid at the pumps. Nationwide, gas prices averaged $3.79 on Tuesday, which is higher than the average $3.45 a gallon a year go. Analysts expect prices, particularly in California where costs have risen well over $4 a gallon, will start easing some after an idled refinery resumes production.

Chris Christopher, analyst with IHS Global Insight, says he expects prices to fall to an average of $3.37 a gallon by the end of the year. But even with the modest decline, that only puts costs around where they were a year ago ? suggesting that prices won't come down nearly as quickly as they have risen. Even so, the fact that the nation's refineries are aging and there has not been one built since 1976 could nonetheless mean prices will be volatile.

High food prices ? Unless you're a hardcore vegetarian, expect to spend more on groceries next year.

The drought gripping more than half of the country means consumers can expect to pay 3% to 4% more for their groceries next year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has estimated. Higher taxes ? As if higher gas and food prices aren't enough to deal with, how about higher taxes? Regardless of what happens with the fiscal cliff, many Americans will see less in their paychecks starting in January when the temporary payroll tax holiday ends.

The end of the tax cut, enjoyed by 122 million wage earners, means that the typical American family (with an income of $50,054) will have about $1,000 less in additional annual income. Put another way, that's about $40 less in a biweekly paycheck -- an amount needed for small, but essential things, like filling up a gas tank for the week or paying the electric bill for the month. US Navy sailors accused of raping woman in Japan

Two U.S. Navy petty officers are in custody in Okinawa in the alleged sexual assault and robbery of a Japanese woman in an incident that could further inflame anti-American sentiment on the strategic Japanese island.

The two sailors followed a 27-year-old woman to her apartment complex where they allegedly raped and robbed her in the parking lot about 4 a.m. Tuesday, authorities in Japan said.? A third sailor who reportedly witnessed the assault was taken into custody by Japanese police and later released to the U.S. Navy, according to NBC News.

The sailors were identified as Seaman Christopher Browning and Petty Officer 3rd Class Skyler Dozierwalker, both 23, of the Fort Worth Naval Air Station in Texas, The Associated Press reported.

According to Japan broadcaster NHK World, the woman told police that she was walking home when she was attacked. She said she did not know the men.?She suffered a neck injury.

Under the terms of a Status of Forces Agreement between the U.S. and Japan, Japanese authorities have jurisdiction and the authority to charge and bring the accused to trial. If convicted, the men could also be imprisoned by the Japanese.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service, or NCIS, is conducting a parallel investigation alongside the Japanese in the event the two accused are released to U.S. Navy custody.

The two sailors in custody were on overnight leave and crewmembers on a U.S. Navy cargo plane that was in Okinawa for only a day or two while on a delivery mission, officials told NBC News.

Okinawa prefecture spokesman Susumu Matayoshi said the alleged rape ?shocked all Okinawans and is unforgivable,? the AP reported.

Vice Foreign Minister Shuji Kira lodged a protest with U.S. Ambassador John Roos, who promised full cooperation with the investigation, according to the AP.

Okinawa hosts more than half of the nearly 50,000 American troops in Japan. Local opposition to the U.S. bases over noise, safety concerns and crime flared into mass protests after the 1995 rape of a schoolgirl by three American servicemen.

Many Japanese want to see the U.S. airbase moved off the island chain.
