Using Music in Online Videos | Business 2 Community

using music in web videosChoosing the right music for your online video is one of those things that you think should be easy. When you get round to looking for the right music for your video you realise it isn?t easy at all.

The main reasons it is challenging are that:

a) you are restricted in terms of what you can use for copyright and budget reasons
b) you need to find music that evokes the emotion in your audience that you are aiming for.

It is particularly difficult if you haven?t done it before! Here are some hints and tips about music for video on a creative level and also on a practical/legal level.

Businesses that don?t have to worry about the expense of using popular copyrighted music have an advantage. They can consider using music that their audiences are already familiar with and that has particular emotional connotations. Of course, there is some risk in the sense that they can?t guarantee how everyone in their audience feels about a particular song. However, if they go with majority opinion and look at how the song has sold, they won?t go far wrong.

Here are some examples of online videos that have used popular music brilliantly:

This video was named the best TV campaign in the world at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in 2012. The use of a Willie Nelson cover of Coldplay?s The Scientist underpins the emotional impact that the video has about the impact of farming and the importance of taking care of the environment.

John Lewis Christmas Advert 2012

This John Lewis advert has been spoken about in the press. The song is a breathy cover of the old classic, The Power of Love, which always works well with the UK public ? especially at Christmas.

T-Mobile Welcome Home

This is my favourite. It pulls on a lot of classic songs that fulfill the theme, evoking lots of different emotions. At the same time you can?t help but be in awe at the full orchestral score, performed entirely without an instrument other than the human voice.

Choosing the right music for your online video

Your video is full of images which are also important for stimulating an emotional reaction. Your music needs to reinforce the emotional impact of your visuals. This video from Brainy Video gives examples of how you can change the emotion created by the same bit of footage by using two different types of music (skip to 6:10 for this bit in particular.)

Criteria for selecting music for web video

Music sharing sites are organized in categories. Music is also tagged. This is extremely useful for those of us searching for music. The Free Music Archive list by genre for example:

music in online videos

Emotional impact of using music in online videos

You want music that makes your audience feel a particular way. Generally, you want people to take an action after watching your video. Consider what emotional reaction is going to influence the viewer to take the action you have been hoping for.

Style/genre of the music

The product or service that your video is promoting will influence the styles of music you will consider for your video. If you aren?t sure what style you want, maybe consider what styles of music would be inappropriate for your video. An extreme example is that you probably wouldn?t want to use hip hop for a funeral related business video (I say ?probably? because of course, rules are made to be broken!).

Pace, flow and rhythm of the music in your web videos

It will depend at which point you come to choosing your music but you need to consider the pace of your edited video against the music you are considering. It may be the case that you want to edit to your music. In which case, you need to be aware of the pace of your music when you choose it and how you are going to cut your edit to the music. Use music as a tool to speed your pace up or slow it down when needed.

Length of song to use

Music can obviously be cut up like your footage but think about length when selecting the track. Not just the length of the whole song but also the length of the verse?s and chorus etc ? you may want to use particular sections of the song.

Budget for your online video?s music

Your budget will influence where you can look for music for your video. If you have money to spend you will have more choice. However, if you don?t, there is a lot of great free/low cost music out there which can be used under Creative Commons licensing rules.

Legal limits to music usage in video

If you didn?t invent or compose a piece of music yourself it means someone else owns it and it is likely to be under copyright. The exception is when the owner of a piece of music has been dead for 70 years. If you use copyrighted music without permission you will be fined an amount that depends of the worth of the music in question.

Creative Commons rocks

It?s not all bad news though. Creative Commons facilitates the sharing and use of music through free legal tools. Creative Commons allows artists to share their work by giving permission to the public to use their work. It means they can specify which elements of their work they would like to share and the rules around this.

CC licensed music can be found on the following websites: ccmixter, Magnatune, BeatPink and AudioFarm.

One way to ensure you have the exact music you need and that you aren?t breaking the law is to commission original music for your videos. However, this also depends on your budget. If you pay for something to be written and recorded you won?t have to worry about any future legal ramifications and you will have original music that can be used in other contexts.

If you are new to using music in online video and choosing the right music, it is important to take the time to search the Internet and become familiar with what is out there. It is also useful to experiment with different music for your videos. You might not find the right track straight away and you also can?t judge if a track is the right one for your video without seeing it alongside the footage. Play around and try different things ? it will help you be more creative and the result will be worth it.

Android 4.1.2 update ready for global Galaxy S3, multi-view and other features included

Android Central

International S3 gets full-screen multi-tasking and a slew of other features in latest update

It's early December, and as rumored, the Android 4.1.2 update has started rolling out on international Galaxy S3 phones (HSPA+ version, GT-i9300), starting with devices in Poland. But there's more to this update than the minor change in OS version would indicate. As was also rumored, the new update adds the "multi-view" multitasking feature that originally made its debut on the Galaxy Note 2. Multi-view allows you to hold down the back key to bring up a multi-tasking menu, then partition your screen in two in order to run two apps on-screen at the same time.

Also new is "page buddy." which adds additional context-sensitive home screen pages that activate when you've got headphones connected, or if you're roaming overseas. There's also a redesigned gallery app -- again, from the Note 2 -- and a customizable notification panel. The Paper Artist app from the Galaxy Note 2 is included too, in addition to Group Cast for media sharing.

Smart rotation from the Galaxy Note 2 has also made it across, and the Samsung keyboard has been upgraded too. We've can't yet confirm whether it's the same SwiftKey-based keyboard that's found on the Note 2, but given that just about every other Note 2 feature is present and accounted for, it's pretty likely that's exactly what it is.

So there's a lot of new stuff for Galaxy S3 owners to get stuck into. Kudos to Samsung for porting these new features back to the S3. SamMobile has a direct download for the Polish version of this update already; other territories should start to get this update over-the-air and through Kies in the coming days and weeks.

If you're curious about multi-view, we've embedded our quick video walkthrough on the Note 2 after the break.

Mortar attack on Syrian school kills 29 children

BEIRUT (AP) ? A mortar slammed into a ninth-grade classroom in the Damascus suburbs on Tuesday, killing 29 students and a teacher, according to state media, as the civil war closed in on President Bashar Assad's seat of power.

The state-run news agency SANA blamed the attack on terrorists, the term the regime uses for rebels who are fighting to topple the government.

An Education Ministry official, however, said 13 students and one teacher had been killed. The discrepancy could not be immediately reconciled.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.

The mortar hit the al-Batiha school in al-Wafideen camp, about 25 kilometers (15 miles) northeast of Damascus, according to SANA. The camp houses 25,000 people displaced from the Golan Heights since the 1967 war between Syria and Israel.

"It's a terrorist attack on educational institutions and on students," Hassan Mohsen, the director of Quneitra Education Department, told The Associated Press.

Further details were not immediately released.

The violence comes as Syrian forces fired artillery at rebel targets in and around the capital and the international community grew increasingly alarmed about the regime's chemical weapons stocks.

Syrian rebels have made gains in recent weeks, overrunning military bases and bringing the fight to Damascus. Since Thursday, the capital has seen some of the heaviest fighting in more than four months, killing scores of people, forcing international flights to turn back or cancel flights and prompting the United Nations to withdraw most of its international staff.

"The push to take Damascus is a real one, and intense pressure to take control of the city is part of a major strategic shift by the rebel commanders' strategy," said Mustafa Alani, a Middle East analyst from the Geneva-based Gulf Research Center. "They have realized that without bringing the fight to Damascus, the regime will not collapse."

U.S. intelligence has detected signs the regime was moving chemical weapons components around within several sites in recent days, according to a senior U.S. defense official and two U.S. officials. The activities involved movement within the sites, rather than the transfer of components in or out of various sites, two of the officials said.

But this type of activity had not been detected before and one of the U.S. officials said it bears further scrutiny.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen warned Tuesday that "if anybody uses chemical weapons, I would expect an immediate reaction from the international community."

His comments echoed a warning on Monday from President Barack Obama that there would be consequences if Assad made the "tragic mistake" of deploying chemical weapons.

"Syrian stockpiles of chemical weapons are a matter of great concern," Fogh Rasmussen said as he arrived in Brussels.

Syria is believed to have hundreds, if not thousands, of tons of chemical agents, including mustard gas, a blistering agent, and the more lethal nerve agents sarin and VX, experts say.

Syria is party to the 1925 Geneva Protocol banning chemical weapons in war.

In July, Syria threatened to unleash its chemical and biological weapons in case of a foreign attack. The statement was Syria's first-ever acknowledgement that the country possesses weapons of mass destruction.

But the regime quickly tried to clarify its comments, saying "all of these types of weapons ? IF ANY ? are in storage and under security." That appeared to be an attempt to return to the regime's position of neither confirming nor denying whether it possessed non-conventional weapons.

NATO foreign ministers are expected Tuesday to approve member Turkey's request for Patriot anti-missile systems to bolster its defense against strikes from neighboring Syria.

Ankara, which has firmly backed the Syrian opposition, wants the Patriots to defend against possible retaliatory attacks by Syrian missiles carrying chemical warheads.

Syria is reported to have an array of artillery rockets, as well as short- and medium-range missiles in its arsenal ? some capable of carrying chemical warheads.

Fyodor Lukyanov, editor of Russia in Global Affairs foreign policy magazine, said Assad will never leave without a fight because he has so few options.

"Assad realizes that there is no way back for him," said Lukyanov, a leading Russian foreign policy expert with high-level Foreign Ministry connections. "If he tries to jump the boat, his own supporters will not forgive him for doing that. And if he loses, no one will give him any guarantees."

In the Damascus area, the Britain-based opposition activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Tuesday's clashes between rebels and troops loyal to Assad were taking place in Beit Saham, Akraba and Yalda suburbs as well as near the international airport.

The Observatory relies on reports from activists on the ground.

The Damascus suburbs, which have been opposition strongholds since the uprising against Assad began in March 2011, have been the scene of heavy fighting since last week following the start of an army offensive to regain lost territory around the capital. Assad's forces have so far repelled major rebel advances on the capital, though their hold may be slipping.

SANA reported that a journalist for the state-run Tishrin newspaper was killed near his home in al-Tadhamon suburb of Damascus. Naji Assaad was "assassinated by an armed terrorist group" Tuesday morning on his way to work, SANA said. The regime refers to rebels fighting to topple Assad as terrorists.

The Syrian uprising began with peaceful protests in March 2011, but has since morphed into a civil war that activists say has killed more than 40,000 people.

Reports emerged Tuesday of at least three killings of at least a dozen people each a day earlier.

A regime shell attack on the Aleppo neighborhood of Bustan al-Qasr killed 12 men, the Observatory said. Amateur videos posted online showed bloody and dismembered bodies lying on a sidewalk in front of destroyed shops as people struggled to lift the wounded into vans and pick-up trucks.

Nearby, dozens of men stood in what the unnamed cameraman said was a bread line.

"We still see people standing in a long line despite a massacre to get bread," the cameraman says.

The Observatory also reported 13 dead in a separate attack in Aleppo's Halak neighborhood.

The group said at least 17 unidentified bodies were found in the Damascus suburb of Thiyabiyeh.

In an online video showing the dead lined up on a floor, many of their heads bloody, an off camera voice says they were shot after being detained at a government checkpoints.

The videos appeared genuine and corresponded to other reports on the incidents.

Washington has so far declined to intervene in the crisis, saying doing so could worsen the conflict.

On Monday, U.S. officials said the White House and its allies were weighing military options to secure Syria's chemical and biological weapons.

Syria is believed to have several hundred ballistic surface-to-surface missiles capable of carrying chemical warheads, and a U.S. defense official said American and allied intelligence officials have detected activity around more than one of Syria's chemical weapons sites in the last week.

As the battles rage on the ground, there was growing speculation about the fate of a top Syrian spokesman who has become a prominent face of the regime.

Lebanese security officials say Jihad Makdissi, the Foreign Ministry's spokesman, flew Monday from Beirut to London. But it was not clear whether Makdissi had defected, quit his post, or been forced out. Syria had no official comment on Makdissi, who speaks fluent English and has defended the regime's crackdown on dissent.

5 year olds are generous only when they're watched

Thursday, November 1, 2012

Children as young as five are generous when others are aware of their actions, but antisocial when sharing with a recipient who can't see them, according to research published Oct. 31 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Kristin Lyn Leimgruber and colleagues from Yale University.

Adults are more likely to behave in ways that enhance their reputation when they are being watched or their actions are likely to be made public than when they are anonymous, but this study examines the origins of such behavior in young children for the first time. For their study, the researchers presented five year olds with stickers and gave them the option of sharing one or four stickers with another five year old. The authors found that children were more generous when they could see the recipient than when the recipient was hidden from view, and were also more generous when they had to give stickers in a transparent container rather than an opaque one (meaning the recipient could see what they were receiving). They also found that these behaviors were independent of how many stickers the children were given to keep for themselves.

According to the authors, these results show that children as young as five can make strategic choices about whether to be generous, depending on whether or not a recipient is aware of their actions. Leimgruber explains, "Although the frequency with which children acted antisocially is striking, the conditions under which they chose to act generously are even more interesting and suggest that children likely use much more sophisticated prosocial strategies than we previously assumed. Much like the patterns of charity we see in adults, donation tendencies in children appear to be driven by the amount of information available to others about their actions? for both adults and children, the more others know about their actions, the more likely they are to act generously."

Update: Droidax Powerpack for the Galaxy S3 fixes case design flaw

Droidax Power Pack for Samsung Galaxy S3.

Here's a quick update on the Droidax Power Pack for the Samsung Galaxy S3 that we reviewed a couple months ago. In our original review, we noted that the case didn't seem to fit properly up top, and so the phone could potentially come loose -- possibly damaging the microUSB plug on the case, or the port on the phone itself. Either way, that was no bueno.

Droidax has sent us a redesigned top half of the case, and the update indeed keeps things a little more snug. The left-hand side of the phone can still pop out ever so slightly, but the right-hand side kept everything as it should be.

And so with that update, we're ready to recommend the Droidax Power Pack for the Samsung Galaxy S3, if you're ready to spring $49 for the combination case/2300 mAh external battery.

Check out our updated hands-on after the break.

You Create The Right Attitude In Your Horse : Sports and Recreation

You are here: Home / Equestrian / You Create The Right Attitude In Your Horse

If you?re into pony shows, take careful note of the way in which the riders coordinate with their horses next time you go to one. If you are into motorbike races, watch the way in which the riders ease their bikes through tight turns. If you see a professional in action, consider his economy of action. The true pro almost appears to think his way thru. When he believes his bike is going round that U-turn, it does. If he believes his pony is going to take that obstacle, it will. There is no exaggerated motion, there is no loud remonstration. Forget exaggerated motion, there does not even seem to be the minimum ordinary motion required. The rider chooses and the horse or bike responds.

I have seen croupiers at casinos deal cards with such talent their hands appear to be still and the cards seem to fly out of their own free will. They travel exactly the same path to exactly the same spot in front of each player at the table at precisely the same speed.

So what?s all this leading up to?

What do all of these experts and professionals have in common? They have the soft touch. They appear to exercise their will more and their physical faculties less when they are getting their horses and bikes and playing cards to do what they desire. The truth is, naturally, that they are physically doing these things, but with such exquisite understanding and coordination with their horses, bikes or cards that you just can?t quite see what exactly the physical action was.

Top class horsemen appear to ride and guide their horses with invisible and inaudible cues and commands. The horse appears but a physical extension of the rider, or possibly it is the other way round. Aesthetically speaking, this class of horseman makes an image of perfect joy with his horse.

When you are ?breaking in? your pony, you want to do it with the firmest of resolve, but the softest of touch. You need your pony to be absolutely clear on who is the leader, but you also desire your horse to respond to your cues almost before they transform from thought to physical action.

You can?t achieve perfect coordination with him with the whip. You?ll achieve unwilling, grudging obedience, and you will never make a pretty sight with your horse. To realize perfect coordination with your pony of the ?two bodies and one mind? class, you need to earn his trust. And a corporal approach will never earn that trust.

It could be hard work, nevertheless it is miles away from impossible. Your horse is bright enough to respond well if you?re intelligent enough to teach well, and all it desires is total patience and persistence from you.

I have heard people say you can train the ideal pony only when you get the right pony. Unless you?re talking about horses with incurable physical shortcomings, I personally believe every horse can be trained right. You cause the right disposition when you show the right approach.

Aggressive brain tumors can originate from a range of nervous system cells

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Scientists have long believed that glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most aggressive type of primary brain tumor, begins in glial cells that make up supportive tissue in the brain or in neural stem cells. In a paper published October 17 in Science, however, researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have found that the tumors can originate from other types of differentiated cells in the nervous system, including cortical neurons.

GBM is one of the most devastating brain tumors that can affect humans. Despite progress in genetic analysis and classification, the prognosis of these tumors remains poor, with most patients dying within one to two years of diagnosis. The Salk researcher's findings offer an explanation for the recurrence of GBM following treatment and suggest potential new targets to treat these deadly brain tumors.

"One of the reasons for the lack of clinical advances in GBMs has been the insufficient understanding of the underlying mechanisms by which these tumors originate and progress," says Inder Verma, a professor in Salk's Laboratory of Genetics and the Irwin and Joan Jacobs Chair in Exemplary Life Science.

To better understand this process, Verma's team harnessed the power of modified viruses, called lentiviruses, to disable powerful tumor suppressor genes that regulate the growth of cells and inhibit the development of tumors. With these tumor suppressors deactivated, cancerous cells are given free rein to grow out of control.

To do that, Verma and his colleagues attached small RNA molecules, known as short hairpin RNAs, to the modified viruses and injected them directly into very few cells in the brains of genetically engineered mice that express an enzyme known as CRE specifically in neurons, astrocytes or neural stem cells. The modified viruses target two genes -- -neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) and p53 -- -that, when mutated, are implicated in severe gliomas like GBM. Using sophisticated analytical techniques, they discovered that neurons genetically converted by the lentiviruses that also produce green fluorescent protein (GFP) as a marker to track the progression of tumors are capable of forming malignant gliomas.

Because the origin of glioblastomas from neurons has not been previously reported, the Salk scientists provided further evidence that mature neurons can be transformed by these oncogenes by isolating cortical neurons from genetically engineered mice and transducing them with one of the lentiviruses. The neurons that were transplanted back into the mice developed the same tumors as the ones in the laboratory.

"Our findings," says lead author Dinorah Friedmann-Morvinski, a postdoctoral researcher in the Laboratory of Genetics, "suggest that, when two critical genes -- -NF-1 and p53 -- -are disabled, mature, differentiated cells acquire the capacity to reprogram [dedifferentiate] to a neuroprogenitor cell-like state, which can not only maintain their plasticity, but also give rise to the variety of cells observed in malignant gliomas."

If scientists can block the process of dedifferentiation or proliferation of dedifferentiated neuroprogenitor cells, they may be able to stop tumor progression. That's important in an aggressive disease like GBM because of its high rate of recurrence.

"Our results offer an explanation of recurrence of gliomas following treatment," says Verma, "because any tumor cell that is not eradicated can continue to proliferate and induce tumor formation, thereby perpetuating the cycle of continuous cell replication to form malignant gliomas."

The scientists say the tumors in their mouse model are similar to GBMs that affect humans. Because they have the same pathology and characteristic genetic signature, scientists can study potential therapies in mice that should, theoretically, work in humans. While they may not eradicate GBM, these therapies may slow the progression of the disease and improve patients' quality of life.

Other researchers on the study were Eugene Ke, Yasushi Soda, Tomotoshi Marumoto and Oded Singer of the Salk Institute; and Eric Bushong and Mark Ellisman of the University of California, San Diego.

The work was supported by the National Institutes of Health, Ipsen/Biomeasure, the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation, and the National Center for Research Resources.

Discoveries hold promise for treatment of Hepatitis B virus

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? A University of Colorado Boulder-led team has discovered two prime targets of the Hepatitis B virus in liver cells, findings that could lead to treatment of liver disease in some of the 400 million people worldwide currently infected with the virus.

CU-Boulder Professor Ding Xue, who led the studies, said scientists have been looking for cellular targets of the Hepatitis B virus, or HBV, for more than three decades. Infections from HBV promote hepatitis (inflammation of the liver), cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) and liver cancer and can be transmitted through blood and bodily fluids, unprotected sex, unsterile needles and from infected mother to offspring during birth.

Xue said scientists have known for some time that HBV encodes a pathogenic, tumor-promoting protein known as HBx, but how it works has remained largely unknown. In two new studies, Xue and his colleagues showed that the "host targets" of HBx in human cells are two small cell proteins known as Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL, both of which are well-known cell death inhibitors but which have not previously been implicated in HBV infection.

HBx uses a particular "motif," a small string of protein building blocks known as amino acids that resemble those seen in some cell death-causing proteins, to interact with the Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL targets and stimulate an elevation of calcium in the host cell. The calcium elevation then triggers both viral HBV replication and cell death, said Xue.

When the researchers introduced gene mutations into the motif, HBx binding to the Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL proteins and viral replication were prevented. Similarly, when either Bcl-2 or Bcl-xL proteins were "knocked out" or weakened in human liver cells, HBx was less able to cause an increase in calcium and viral replication inside the infected cells.

"Our most important findings are the identification of the motif itself and the two HBx host targets," said Xue of CU-Boulder's molecular, cellular and developmental biology department. "Now we can start thinking about new drug targets to treat HBV."

Two papers on the subject led by Xue were published online Oct. 22 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. In addition to major CU-Boulder co-authors Xin Geng, Brian Harry, Qinghua Zhou, Yan Qin and Amy Palmer, a group led by Professor Ning-Shao Xia from the National Institute of Diagnostics and Vaccine Development in Infectious Diseases at Xiamen University in China collaborated on one of the studies.

The World Health Organization estimated in July that about 600,000 people die annually from acute or chronic HBV infection, which is most predominant in Asia and Africa.

In one of the PNAS studies, the authors used a tiny roundworm known as C. elegans, a widely used animal model in biomedical research, to identify HBx host targets within the cell. Xue and his team showed that HBx can induce cell death in C. elegans through a protein known as CED-9, mimicking an early stage of liver infection by HBV.

Previous work had shown CED-9 in C. elegans is a homolog of the human Bcl-2 protein -- a different protein in a different animal that has a similar function. Despite the stark differences between roundworms and humans, scientists estimate 35 percent of C. elegans genes have human homologs.

"Our results suggest that C. elegans can serve as a good animal model for identifying crucial host factors and cell signaling pathways and aid in development of strategies to treat HBV-induced liver disorders," said Xue. "I think the use of C. elegans will galvanize the field of HBV study, which has been in search of a good animal model for three decades."

Simple animal models like fruit flies and roundworms have been critical for understanding fundamental biological processes such as aging, cell death and the regulation of gene expression. "Many would not have considered using C. elegans as a model to study HBV, but the genetic 'tools' of C. elegans are ideal for the identification of viral host targets, even though C. elegans is not a native host for the virus," said CU's Harry. Harry is pursuing both a Ph.D. degree in MCD Biology at CU-Boulder and an M.D. at the CU School of Medicine on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora through the Medical Scientist Training Program.

"Both studies show that if you create two mutations in this small HBx motif, it takes away its ability to bind to Bcl-2 family proteins. This wipes out viral replication and host cell death caused by HBx expression," said Harry.

Xue said there currently is no effective treatment for chronic HBV carriers, although some people with chronic HBV are treated with interferon and anti-viral drugs. But such treatments are either unavailable or too expensive in developing countries where most of the HBV infections are occurring. "That's why these new findings could have profound clinical and pharmaceutical implications for the treatment of HBV patients," he said.

Harry said the Hepatitis B vaccine, which was developed in 1982, is administered around the world and has been shown to work well in preventing new infections. "The problem is that once you are infected, there is no effective way to remove the virus from the body," he said. "When the virus replicates in liver cells, it causes cycles of cellular damage, inflammation and tissue regeneration, resulting in the accumulation of genetic mutations and liver cancer."

HBV is 50 to 100 times more infectious than the HIV virus, according to WHO officials. In China and other parts of Asia, most people acquire HBV during childhood and 8 to 10 percent of the adult population is chronically infected. "Because of this, understanding how HBV and HBx cause pathogenesis can have dramatic clinical impact," said Xue.

Funding for the two PNAS studies was provided by the National Institutes of Health grants F30 NS070596 and R01 GM059083, GM079097, GM088241 and GM084027. Additional funding came from the China National Science Foundation and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

Blocking Out Bad Business Writing

There have been some improvements, but on the whole business writing still consists of incomprehensible and un-engaging jargon. It needs to end.

Read this and see how much of it makes sense to you:

EFG Inc. is an award-winning provider of value-added end-to-end solutions that help industries leverage innovative solutions through ethical and synergistic products and services.

You may not have needed to pick up a dictionary to understand what is being said here ? it?s perfectly possible for you to get the gist through context clues ? but it?s still quite difficult to get through without pausing to analyze the components of the message. And if you have to work hard just to understand what it is, exactly, a business does, what does that say about the user-friendliness of its products and services? Business copy may have nothing to do with how easily a person can use a product or service, but it DOES imply a company?s commitment to providing convenience to customers.

In other words, if your business can?t be bothered to make its written communications clear and understandable to the people it?s selling to, it can?t expect people to believe it?s there to help. It?s not even helping them understand what it does as a company, so how can they expect it to help with anything else?

The sad fact: Clients insist on bad business writing

I?m willing to admit that I?m writing this with some bias ? I?m a freelance writer, and I?ve had to work on writing copy for business. I?ve officially been asked to write everything from ?About? pages to product descriptions and, one memorable time, I was even asked to help write a mission statement. For the most part, it?s great work?until they insist that I use ?power words? and ?buzzwords? in their copy.

Now, I understand that it?s all part of the TRADITION of business writing ? traditionally speaking, these big words and phrases come off as impressive and professional in the world of business. There was a time, after all, that the mere knowledge of imposing and exciting (albeit empty) language was enough to earn fear and respect within an organization and industry. These words make you SEEM authoritative, and given that success is based on being the best, being the authority, it?s easy to use these words as a shortcut for denoting influence and success.

It?s really not working anymore

Of course, times have changed. Authority doesn?t come from knowing big words anymore; it comes from being able to clearly communicate important values and concepts to as many people as possible. As such, there is NO place for jargon in business writing anymore ? whether you?re trying to impress executives or sell things to your customers, clear, straightforward language is the way to go. This is especially important in this day and age, when your business writing needs to expand to a larger audience, like the Internet.

If you really want to exude authority, you need to stop bad business writing in your organization and instead focus on making your messages clear, unique, and engaging. Leave no doubt as to what your business does for its customers, differentiate yourself from competition (and indeed, even OTHER companies in general), and inspire interest from readers, like so:

EFG Inc. is a company that wants to help folks any way it can, which is why it sells the latest and coolest eco-friendly gadgets and software for business. If you want, we can even help you figure out the best device-application mix for your needs. It?s the sort of thing we win awards for.

Isn?t it much easier to trust a company that has this kind of copy? So why not go for something like this?

Greek Society Unravels Under Austerity Measures ? naked capitalism

Costas Lapavitsas is a professor in economics at the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies. He teaches the political economy of finance, and he?s a regular columnist for The Guardian. Here he?s interviewed by Paul Jay of the Real News Network.

More at The Real News

Listening, it sounds like a situation with the potential to become overly dynamic. Or kinetic. This passage caught my eye:

JAY: [In] an interview I once did with Noam Chomsky a couple of years ago, he made a point which I thought was interesting, which?just how quickly German society accepted a Hitler and how quickly you go from kind of an avant-garde, libertarian Berlin to a fascist Berlin. I mean, what?s the danger of that in Greece?

LAPAVITSAS: Oh, the danger is very real. The danger is very real. I mean, the center of politics, the political organizations that have run Greece for four decades, have been hollowed out.

You see, people misunderstand. They think that the Greek state has always been very weak, inefficient, the Greek politicians are incapable, and so on. That is nonsense. The Greek state has been a very capable state and it has been able to deliver all kinds of things. You know, it?s a middle-income country. Its political system has been uniquely stable in Europe. Two parties have alternated in power and nothing has been changing for three to four decades.

Now that?s finished. That?s come to an end. These two parties are completely discredited. The center is hollowed out. And what has happened is that parties on the left and parties on the extreme right have been strengthened.

And that?s a reflection of what I mentioned to you before of the confusion, the despondency, and the anger among ordinary people. They do not look at the center any longer for solutions; they look at both ends of the political spectrum. Now, the dominant side there is the left. People look towards the left. They expect the solution from the left, from SYRIZA.

However, an increasing number of people, people who used to be to [incompr.] to the main part of the right now are looking to the extreme right. And it?s a logical thing. It?s a logical thing. If the center-right has made itself discredited, then a lot of people will look to the extreme right, which promises clean hands, efficiency, dealing with foreigners the way in which they understand that, and so on. That can be very quick. That can be very fast.

?They expect the solution from the left, from SYRIZA.? OK, and? Readers?

Internet Marketing Success ? How to Accomplish Mor | Dreams ...

When you are an Internet Marketer, one of the most important skills that you should learn is time management because in addition to doing more in less time, you will be able to come up with better online marketing strategies and plans for growing your online business. The real point, however, is: what exactly should you do to get as much from your time as possible? Exactly where does your focus need to be if you want to ensure that you can keep working in the right direction to make sure you finish things in time? This article will explore a few things that you can do to improve this particular skill.

Each Internet marketer has to deal with information overload at some point and this kind of information overload can lead to a loss in productivity and that is why it is important for you to take care of it early on. Start off by putting filters wherever you can, like in your email, your RSS reader and more. This will allow you to filter out anything that might prove to be time consuming and is of no use. Not just that but it is important that you only choose informational sources that will deliver the proper sorts of knowledge to you. When you subscribe to mailing lists that are mostly promotional and not value filled, unsubscribe to them. Set the kitchen time and then work against it; this can as much as double your speed and your productivity. There?s so much more you can achieve by simply applying this one tactic; when your mind races against time and pushes you to work quicker, you get more done in less time, which is obvious. For example, if you take twenty minutes to complete one five hundred word article, then put up a time for ten minutes and see if you can get it done. Of course, you need to make sure that the quality isn?t diminished as you work to get it done.

Working consistently is fantastic and offers real results but there is a difference between working constantly and working consistently. When you don?t do anything but work you?ll be busy and move your business forward but you?ll also burn out. If you would like to increase the level of your productivity, it?s important to take some time to rest once in a while. Go out for a dinner, workout on weekdays, spend time with your friends, etc. You might feel like you are wasting time this way but you are actually being really smart and ensuring that you get as much as possible from your time. All of the tips we?ve talked about in this article are easy to apply and can really change the way you see online business. After all, the growth of your web business depends on how you manage your time and your tasks to get the most out of them. The only thing that you need to keep in mind at all times is to ensure that you?re experimenting with new ideas to improve your productivity on a regular basis, so that you?re continuously improving your return on your time investment. wow leveling guide

Threatened species listing for polar bears contested in U.S. court

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Polar bears' designation as a threatened species was challenged in a U.S. appeals court on Friday, with a lawyer for Alaska and other parties arguing that regulators had failed to back up the listing.

Alaska and other plaintiffs that include hunters and the California Cattlemen's Association are appealing a federal court ruling last year that upheld the Interior Department's 2008 designation of the bears as threatened because their icy habitat is melting away.

Murray Feldman, a lawyer for Alaska and other appellants, told the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia that the government had failed to show how the big white bears likely would be nearing extinction at the middle of this century.

The department's decision on the Arctic mammals was "arbitrary and capricious" since it was based on flawed models, Feldman said in oral arguments before a three-judge panel.

Katherine Hazard, a lawyer for the department's Fish and Wildlife Service, said that the designation relied on decades of research and long-term trends underpinned it.

"The agency needs to make a determination based on the best available science, which the agency did here," she said.

A designation that a species is threatens means that it is likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future in all or a significant part of its range.

Bruce Woods, a Fish and Wildlife spokesman, said the listing drew more attention to the bears' plight and also triggered funding for programs including patrols to limit contact with humans and a recovery plan for the bears.

Arctic sea ice shrank to a record low of 1.32 million square miles (3.41 million square km) by mid-September, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency reported this month.

A decision by the appeals court is not expected for months.

Alaska and oil companies have argued that Endangered Species Act protections for polar bears diminish opportunities for Alaska energy development.

The state has said in its appeals court filing that bears have survived previous warming periods and most populations have grown or remained stable despite shrinkage of ice.

The case is Safari Club International et al v. Ken Salazar et al and Center for Biological Diversity et al, No. 11-5219.

Autumn Trees That Poison Our Pets | ASPCA Blog

Guest blog by Dr. Michael Knight, Senior Veterinary Toxicologist at the ASPCA?s Animal Poison Control Center

Fall marks the time of year when trees begin to drop their fruit and leaves.? In general, this is a good thing, right? But pet parents should be aware that certain tree fruits can be deadly to dogs.

One fruit in particular?the Chinaberry tree (Latin Melia)?is valued for its high quality lumber. Native to Asia, this tree was introduced in the United States around 1830 as an ornamental, but today has become invasive in many areas. As the tree?s marble-sized fruits mature and drop to the ground, dogs sometimes eat and play with them. Natural, poisonous molecules in the fruit can cause severe digestive upset in dogs, often with stomach cramping, bloody vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Seizures can occur in more serious cases, and death can result. We see this problem in dogs every autumn across the United States.?

And horse lovers, we need to isolate our noble friends from red maple (L. Acer rubrum) trees. As red maple leaves begin to change colors and wilt, a deadly poison begins to develop. If eaten by a horse, the leaf can cause severe illness and even death. The poison in the wilted leaf has not yet been identified, but it makes its way into the bloodstream where it attacks red blood cells. Once enough destruction of red blood cells has occurred, a horse cannot get enough oxygen to the brain and other vital tissues. Poisoned horses can die if not treated in time by a veterinarian.

Check out the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center online for more information about toxic and non-toxic plants.
