Peoria Carp Hunters featured in Animal Planet show

PEORIA, Ill. --?

An Animal Planet TV show featuring the acrobatic exploits of Asian carp along the Illinois River will air Sunday.

TV crews spent four days filming in and around Peoria last summer for an episode of "Off the Hook: Extreme Catches" called "Carpocalypse Now."

The invasive species is feared because it could have a disastrous impact on aquatic life, boating and fishing if the carp migrate from the Mississippi and its tributaries to Lake Michigan. They fish are also known for leaping from the water.

In the show, host Eric Young meets the Peoria Carp Hunters, a local group that hunts the fish with bows and arrows.

Carp Hunter's Nate Wallick tells the (Peoria) Journal Star ( http://bit.ly/P1csgz) that they "had a blast" filming the show.

It airs at 8 p.m.

Successful Online Business Ideas

There is not hard to come by online business ideas that are able to generate a steady income flow, allowing people to work from home and manage their time as they please. Some people are still quite skeptical when it comes to working solely on the Internet and obtaining increased profits with every month, when more and more traffic is registered by websites.

This may be due to the fact that they haven?t read the right guides to lead them towards building a successful online business. Moreover, nowadays there are tested programs that can generate sales and therefore high commissions for you. All people need is to choose the best software and luckily this website has succeeded in doing that.

If you have heard of people that have made hundreds of dollars in a matter of days and you are still wondering how they accomplished building such empowering online business ideas then this article will reveal readers the full methods.

Online Business Ideas ? Revealed Methods

The best online business ideas don?t focus their attention on people that already possess the entire technical package. Nowadays, there is no need for knowing how the Internet appeared because there are people that are willing to share their strategies, people that offer software programs and complete guides.

One great method in the field of online business ideas is CPA Affiliate. No investment is required and profits can be achieved even without you having to build a website. Income presents itself in the form of commissions, as high as 50% from each sale. The products are not yours, are from global companies which offer high commissions in order to convince people to sell for them. Their revenues increase and so do yours.

On the list of online business ideas we must mention eBay. Everyone has heard of this massive website but until now maybe you thought of it only as a place where you enter and buy the necessary products. From now on, buyers can become sellers, if they have the motivation. There is no better motivation than making money from home without too much effort. A small investment is required for auctioning products and then selling them to people from all over the world, a digital camera, and of course being connected to the Internet. If you read about people who have made money on eBay you would be surprised about how much money can be made from selling auctioned products.

Online Business Ideas Materials

Online business ideas are not rocket science and being truly successful is not like landing on the Moon. Following the right directions and taking advice from people that have actually generated income with the help of their methods is the path. These online businessmen present their methods step by step in affordable eBooks, one example being Money on eBay.

Those are some well spent dollars and even if you feel that for the moment the method is not suitable, you will feel no regrets because after all you haven?t spent a small fortune and learned nothing. Everyone should give it a try and build an online business and after that, in return, the respective persons will share their online business ideas with other people just as eager to make money working from home.

John Travolta Massages The Legal System, Wins Court - Perez Hilton

john travolta libel case dismissed robert randolph spa book

Look who's talking now ? John Travolta!

And he's saying whatever the heck he wants after a judge ruled the Saturday Night Fever star was well within his 1st Amendment right to talk smack about a dude who wrote a disparaging book.

Robert Randolph claimed JT was a gay bath house super-fan in his book You'll Never Spa in This Town Again.

The actor dismissed those claims in a statement suggesting the author was mentally unbalanced so Robert filed a civil action against him for libel!

But the judge sided with Mizter Travolta!!

Good for you, Johnny boy!

If someone writes a book about where you're sticking your swordfish, you should be given the opportunity to defend yourself!

The Daily Grind: Office Equipment Auctions: What You Need to Know

If you are looking for a great deal on used office equipment, an auction might be the way to go. Auctions give start-ups, small businesses, or home offices the opportunity to purchase office equipment they might normally not be able to afford on a tight budget. There are several reasons an auction might be held, such as business liquidations, moving sales, fundraisers for non-profits, or government agencies selling surplus or confiscated items (e.g. GovDeals, http://www.govdeals.com/). There are live and online auctions and each can be found by searching the Internet, reading the local newspaper, or subscribing to auction house e-mail alerts. Before you participate in an auction, find out of if the company hosting the auction is a legitimate company, licensed, or bonded. Next, make a general list of items you need and are willing to purchase used, e.g. a color printer, a laser fax machine, a desktop computer; then decide the max you are willing to spend on each. Often times, buyers can preview the office equipment going up for auction first via a catalog or in person. This will give you a chance to make a more detailed list of the office equipment you may want to bid on based on the description. If possible, inspect the items in person and ?kick the tires? so to speak. If time allows, you can take it one step further and research the particular makes and models you are interested in online to check past ratings and current values. The past ratings may force you to eliminate some items from your list and the current values will help determine your spending cap.

?

If you decide to bid on an item, review the terms and conditions first. If the office equipment is sold ?as-is?, you will be responsible for any maintenance and repairs necessary to get the item up and running. It might be a good idea to verify if the manufacturer warranty is still active as well. While at a live or online auction, it?s imperative to give it your full attention. Once a bid is placed, there is no turning back; so, you want to make sure that you are bidding on the correct piece of office equipment. Have you ever purchased office equipment from an auction? If so, we?d love to hear from you. Please share the details with us, like what items did you buy, did you feel like you got a great deal, was it a smooth process, and will you ever purchase office equipment from an auction again??

Google's Niantic Labs launches Field Trip app for Android, helps the working world play hooky

Image

While Apple struggles to figure out how to help its users find their way, the mapping experts at Google have just launched a way to get folks to diverge a bit from their given path. Field Trip, released for Android by Google-owned Niantic Labs, runs in the background on your Android handset, eagerly waiting for you to get near a point of interest. Once that happens, it leaps into action, showing you a card for one of thousands of cool locations -- historic spots, museums, restaurants and the like. Google's partnered with a bunch of taste makers for the project, including Flavorpill, Cool Hunting and its own Zagat, to get things done. You can vote choices up and down, change the frequency of pop ups and post your findings to Twitter, Facebook and that one Plus social network. There's also a driving mode serves as an auditory tour guide when you're behind the wheel. The app's available now as a free download in Play. The iOS version, on the other hand, is coming soon.

Psst... yes, it appears to be US-only for now. Bah, humbug.

Rare great earthquake in April triggers large aftershocks all over the globe

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? Large earthquakes can alter seismicity patterns across the globe in very different ways, according to two new studies by U.S. Geological Survey seismologists. Both studies shed light on more than a decade of debate on the origin and prevalence of remotely triggered earthquakes. Until now, distant but damaging "aftershocks" have not been included in hazard assessments, yet in each study, changes in seismicity were predictable enough to be included in future evaluations of earthquake hazards.

In a study published in this week's issue of Nature, USGS seismologist Fred Pollitz and colleagues analyzed the unprecedented increase in global seismic activity triggered by the Magnitude-8.6 East Indian Ocean quake of April 11, 2012, and in a recently published study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, seismologist Volkan Sevilgen and his USGS colleagues investigated the near-cessation of seismic activity up to 250 miles away caused by the 2004 M9.2 Sumatra earthquake.

While aftershocks have traditionally been defined as those smaller earthquakes that happen after and nearby the main fault rupture, scientists now recognize that this definition is wrong. Instead, aftershocks are simply earthquakes of any size and location that would not have taken place had the main shock not struck.

"Earthquakes are immense forces of nature, involving complex rock physics and failure mechanisms occurring over time and space scales that cannot be recreated in a laboratory environment," said USGS Director Marcia McNutt. "A large, unusual event such as the East Indian earthquake last April is a once-in-a-century opportunity to uncover first order responses of the planet to sudden changes in state of stress that bring us a little closer to understanding the mystery of earthquake generation."

Global aftershock study: April 2012: East Indian Ocean quake triggers many distant quakes

An extraordinary number of earthquakes of M4.5 and greater were triggered worldwide in the six days after the M8.6 East Indian Ocean earthquake in April 2012. These large and potentially damaging quakes, occurring as far away as Mexico and Japan, were triggered within days of the passage of seismic waves from the main shock that generated stresses in Earth's crust.

The East Indian Ocean event was the largest -- by a factor of 10 -- strike-slip earthquake ever recorded (the San Andreas is perhaps the most famous strike-slip fault). "Most great earthquakes occur along subduction zones and involve large vertical motions. No other recorded earthquake triggered as many large earthquakes elsewhere around the world as this one," said Pollitz, "probably because strike-slip faults around the globe were more responsive to the seismic waves produced by a giant strike-slip temblor."

Another clue in the six days of global aftershocks following the M8.6 quake is that the rate of global quakes during the preceding 6-12 days was extremely low. "Imagine an apple tree, with apples typically ripening and then falling at some steady rate," Stein said. "If a week goes by without any falling, there will be more very ripe apples on the tree. Now shake the trunk, and many more than normal might drop."

The authors emphasize that the week of global triggering seen after the East Indian Ocean quake has no bearing on the hypothesis advanced by others that the 2004 M9.2 Sumatra, 2010 M8.8 Maule, Chile, and 2011 M9.0 Tohoku, Japan, are related to each other. Instead, the effect of increased earthquakes lasted a week -- not a decade.

Sumatra quake affects faults up to 250 miles away

While global triggering of large aftershocks appears very rare, regional triggering is common and important to understand for post-main shock emergency response and recovery. Sevilgen and his USGS colleagues studied the largest quake to strike in 40 years to understand just how great the reach is on aftershock occurrence. After the M9.2 earthquake in Sumatra in 2004, aftershocks larger than M4.5 ceased for five years along part of a distant series of linked faults known as the Andaman back arc fault system. Along a larger segment of the same system, the sideways-slipping transform earthquakes decreased by two-thirds, while the rate of rift events -- earthquakes that happen on a spreading center -- increased by 800 percent, according to Sevilgen and his colleagues at the USGS. These very large, but distant seismicity rate changes are unprecedented.

The authors investigated two possible causes for the changes in remote seismicity rates: the dynamic stresses imparted by the main shock rupture, which best explain the global triggering in the April 2012 quake case; and the small but permanent stress changes, which best explain this one. The authors found that the main shock brought the transform fault segments about ? bar of pressure farther from static failure, and the rift segments about ? bar closer to static failure (for comparison, car tires are inflated with about 3 bars of pressure), which matches the seismic observations.

Why it matters

Incorporating the probability of aftershocks into the hazard assessment of an area is important because the damage of even a moderate aftershock sometimes exceeds that wrought by the main event. For example, a M6.3 aftershock five months after the M7.1 New Zealand earthquake in 2010 hit a more populated area, causing 181 deaths and tripling the insured property damage of the main event.

Condolences pour in for 6-day-old panda cub

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As condolences poured in from around the world, National Zoo officials waited Monday for word on why a 6-day-old panda cub died and lamented a heartbreaking setback to their closely watched breeding program.

The cub had liver abnormalities and fluid in its abdomen, but a cause of death will not be known until full necropsy results are available within two weeks.

The cub, believed to be female, died Sunday morning, less than a week after its birth surprised and delighted zoo officials and visitors. Zookeepers had all but given up on the panda mother's chances of conceiving after six years of failed attempts.

"Every loss is hard," National Zoo director Dennis Kelly said. "This one is especially devastating."

This much is known: The cub appeared to be in good condition. It had been drinking its mother's milk. And it wasn't accidentally crushed to death by its mother, which has happened to other panda cubs in captivity. At birth, the cubs are hairless, their eyes are closed and they're about the size of a stick of butter. Their mothers weigh about 1,000 times more.

Native to China, giant pandas have long been the face of the movement to preserve endangered species. A few thousand are believed to remain in the wild, and there are a few hundred in captivity.

Four American zoos have pandas, and several cubs have been born in the U.S., but the bears at the National Zoo are treated like royalty. The zoo was given its first set of pandas in 1972 as a gift from China to commemorate President Richard Nixon's historic visit to the country.

Thousands of people had watched an online video feed of the cub's mother, 14-year-old Mei Xiang, hoping to catch a glimpse of the newborn during its few days of life. Fans from around the country and the world shared their sympathy on social media sites, and many said they shared an emotional connection with the burly, black-and-white bear.

Since the cub's death, Mei Xiang has started eating and interacting with her keepers again. She slept Sunday night while cradling a plastic toy in an apparent show of maternal instinct, Kelly said.

Kelly Parsons of Alexandria, Va., who brought her two young sons to see the pandas Monday, said she felt for Mei Xiang.

"It sounds like the mom is in mourning. Whether you're a parent to an animal or a human being, it's just so sad, the loss of a child," she said.

Suzan Murray, the zoo's chief veterinarian, cautioned that while it may appear the panda is grieving as she cradles the toy, Mei Xiang is a wild animal and her thoughts and emotions are not well understood.

Mei Xiang's only cub, a male named Tai Shan, was born in 2005 and became the zoo's star attraction before he was returned to China in 2010. Since his birth, there had been five unsuccessful attempts to impregnate Mei Xiang, and zoo officials had considered swapping her and her male partner, Tian Tian, for another pair.

Zoo officials said they're focused on Mei Xiang's health but didn't rule out trying to breed her again. At 14, she may have a few more years of fertility remaining. The oldest panda known to have given birth in captivity was 19; pandas can live to their mid-30s.

The mortality rate for panda cubs in the wild is unknown, but in captivity, 26 percent of males and 20 percent of females die in their first year. The zoo's first panda couple, Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing, had five cubs during the 1980s, but none lived more than a few days.

The new cub's liver, about the size of a kidney bean, was harder than usual and discolored, Murray said. The fluid in the cub's abdomen was unusual and could have been a symptom of the liver problem, she said.

There was no evidence of fluid in the cub's lungs, which would suggest pneumonia.

Because Mei Xiang's other cub survived and she appeared to be taking good care of the newborn, zoo officials had been cautiously optimistic. Kelly said he was not aware of anything that could have been done to improve the cub's chances of survival.

The staff was taking the death especially hard because of the work they'd put in over the past six years to produce another cub, Kelly said.

Will Business Owners Ever Hire Again? Probably Not?

Group of business office employeesWith profits soaring, prices rising, cutbacks on wages and benefits, and an American mindset that favors these collective actions (and talking points), why would business owners in this country ever hire again? The lack of hiring, as we will read about, and the fact that we refuse as a country to embrace sustainability and GREEN (where the NEW jobs are) does not bode well for real estate investors and places a tremendous amount of pressure on location investing and market timing and making the right choices.

Will business owners ever hire again? Not now, or not even in the future, according to a recent survey from Newtek Business Services, The Small Business Authority with a portfolio of over 100,000 business accounts. The findings of its monthly ?SB Authority Market Sentiment Survey,? found that 69 percent of small business owners do not plan on hiring. ?Most business owners, it added, looking out on the horizon, are either pessimistic or neutral at best, regarding the overall business environment.

Note here another media and American sentiment overlook: Several business owners during the last 12 months have raised their prices or maintained them to fight off the effects of inflationary pressures eroding their margins. ?Business owners in an economy described as stagnant, need to improve their cash flows and bottom lines while continuing to look towards the only segment of their business where the market enables them to improve their cash flows. Really? Profits and stocks soaring,?profitability?and?productivity?up and less in payroll and health care outlays, and they need to raise prices? C?mon? as Michael Corleone said to Carlo, ?don?t insult my intelligence.?

Will business owners ever hire again? Probably not unless we stop buying into the media hype, the talking points and spending our money on company products and services that do not support America and Americans.

Invest well. Peace.

EPL referee reports Twitter cancer abuse to police

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:13 p.m. ET Sept. 24, 2012

LONDON (AP) -Premier League referee Mark Halsey has asked police to investigate abusive comments about him on Twitter after officiating in the heated match between Liverpool and Manchester United.

The insulting online messages on Monday referenced Halsey's battle with throat cancer in 2009.

Halsey made two contentious decisions in United's 2-1 victory at Anfield on Sunday that went in favor of the visitors.

Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey was sent off in the first half for a challenge on Jonny Evans, and United was later awarded a penalty kick that was scored by Robin van Persie.

Halsey returned to refereeing in March 2010 following his cancer battle.

No Premier League referees have Twitter accounts, according to the body that oversees match officials in England.

Best header goal in MLS in 2012?

PST:?Nice little Twitter fight this morning, with one man near the top of the soccer?s media food chain suggesting Branko Boskovic?s diving header Sunday was the best header goal in MLS this year. For me, it wasn't even top two.

Shutdown averted but 'fiscal cliff' awaits

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congress is moving to quash the threat of a government shutdown, but the prospect of a one-two punch of tax increases and slashing, automatic spending cuts will still confront lawmakers when they return to Washington after Election Day.

The House on Thursday passed a six-month stopgap spending bill to keep federal agencies running past the end of the budget year, the elections and into the spring. It effectively scratched a major item off of Congress' to-do list heading into a potentially brutal postelection, lame duck session.

The bipartisan 329-91 House vote for the measure sent it to the Senate, which is expected to clear it next week for President Barack Obama's signature, capping a year of futility and gridlock on the budget despite a hard-fought spending and deficit-reduction deal last summer.

The short-term spending measure funds the day-to-day operating budgets of Cabinet agencies that are financed annually by Congress through 12 appropriations bills. It would fund the government through March 27 and relieve lawmakers of the burden of trying to pass a catchall omnibus spending measure in November after the election.

While taking the possibility of a government shutdown out of the equation, the so-called fiscal cliff ? a combination of automatic spending cuts and tax hikes set to slam the economy in January ? still hangs over Congress and President Barack Obama.

More than $100 billion in cuts to defense and domestic programs alike loom as punishment for the failure of last year's deficit-reduction supercommittee to strike a follow-up bargain to last summer's debt and budget pact between the lawmakers and the president. The automatic cuts are set to hit at the same time that the Bush-era tax cuts, which were extended two years ago, are set to expire again.

Passage of the stopgap spending measure is likely to be Congress' last major act before lawmakers go home to campaign for re-election. Wrestling with how to avert the fiscal cliff is sure to dominate the lame duck session in November.

The temporary spending bill is needed to avert a government shutdown when the current budget year expires Sept. 30.

Thursday's vote represented a retreat by tea party Republicans since the stopgap measure permits spending at a pace that's $19 billion above the stringent budget plan authored by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., his party's vice presidential nominee.

Instead, the measure permits spending at the higher budget "caps" permitted under last summer's deal. Typically, short-term spending bills freeze agency budgets at existing levels, but Thursday's measure actually would permit an across-the-board 0.6 percent increase, in keeping with the budget accord. It also maintains spending on domestic programs rather than shifting $8 billion from domestic programs to the Pentagon.

Ryan, who is chairman of the House Budget Committee, returned to the Capitol from the campaign trail to vote for the half-year measure, even though it spends billions of dollars more than his budget plan, which has helped define the tight race for the White House.

It is routine for Congress to require one or more temporary spending measures, known as continuing resolutions, because Congress invariably misses the deadline for completing the annual appropriations bills.

But this year the appropriations process has collapsed completely. While the House has managed to pass seven of the 12 spending bills, the Democratic-controlled Senate hasn't passed a single one, despite optimism earlier this year that last year's budget deal could help get the appropriations process back on track.

Democrats say the decision by House GOP leaders to abandon the budget agreement is to blame because it set up a fundamental mismatch between the spending bills produced by the House and Senate Appropriations committees.

"This appropriations process was destined to fail from the start as Republicans chose to ignore the budget (deal's) statutory spending caps in favor of the unworkable caps in the Ryan budget," Rep. David Price, D-N.C., said.

Still, it was remarkable that the Senate didn't take up any appropriations bill. Republicans said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., was too busy teeing up votes to send political messages ? while protecting vulnerable Democrats from difficult votes in relation to spending bills.

The House-passed measure would replenish disaster aid coffers, finance the food stamp program after it lapses on Sept. 30 and reauthorize for six months federal grants to states to run their welfare programs.

Just a handful of high-priority programs would be awarded larger increases, including an initiative to protect government computers from cyberattacks, wildfire suppression efforts, a drive to modernize the U.S. nuclear arsenal and processing of veteran disability claims. A popular initiative to repair the dome of the Capitol was left unfunded, despite a high-profile push by Senate Democrats.

The tension is building up amongst consumers as they anxiously keep on waiting to hear when the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is going to be released. However its first showcasing was done a few days back, and there is a lot to talk about since then and we are comprehensively going to overview in this Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Review.

Body

Although it is natural to assume that the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is going to bear resemblance to its predecessor ? Galaxy Note, it surprisingly seems to be a larger version of the Samsung Galaxy S3. It has got a similar strong and clear design, very crisp with round corners, a bubbled out screen and scant bezels.

Samsung has laid the foundation of a new category that ranks between phones and tablets and experts have even gone so far as to call it ?Phablet? because of its larger-than-usual size for the phone. But then, it?s Samsung; might seem a bit odd to place it next to your ear just to attend a call but it has plenty more to offer for a normal phone

Screen

If you compare it with the original Galaxy Note, the Super HD AMOLED screen is wider now (diagonally). What was initially 5.3? is now a 5.55 inch display with a screen resolution of 1,280 X 720 pixels. The user interface experience is much smoother than was with the older Galaxy Note. You will be able to see crisper colours and apps that simply seem to pop out of the screen.

The S Pen

From what we were briefly able to see, the best thing about the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 was the stylus S Pen which is a bit flatter and thicker than its predecessor. But because the new stylus has been modified, it is only compatible with the Galaxy Note 2 and not with the original Galaxy Note. Samsung has also introduced, what they call as Air View, with this Note 2. This refers to the cursor which is visible on the screen that can be used to open drop-down menus and you don?t need to use the stylus for that.

Internal Hardware

To put it simply, this little beauty is amazingly fast! Unlike its predecessor which ran on dual core, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has a quad core Exynos processor with 1.6GHz and 2GB RAM.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has held its legacy of delivering a powerful 8 MP camera that captures HD photos.

Availability and Price

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Review cannot be complete without information about its price and availability; however the prototype model was unveiled more than a week ago, but so far more information about the release date has not been supplied. Furthermore not much can be said about its price, other than the fact that it is rumoured to be around ?544.98.

X-rays unravel mysterious degradation of Van Gogh painting: Protective varnish caused discoloration

ScienceDaily (Sep. 14, 2012) ? With a sophisticated X-ray analysis scientists have identified why parts of the Van Gogh painting "Flowers in a blue vase" have changed colour over time: a supposedly protective varnish applied after the master's death has made some bright yellow flowers turn to an orange-grey colour. The origin of this alteration is a hitherto unknown degradation process at the interface between paint and varnish, which studies at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility ESRF in Grenoble (France) and at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY in Hamburg (Germany) have revealed for the first time.

The results are published in an upcoming issue of Analytical Chemistry, the first author of which is Geert Van der Snickt, who received a PhD in Conservation and Restauration from the University of Antwerp (Belgium) for this work. The research team was led by Koen Janssens from Antwerp and also comprised scientists from TU Delft (Netherlands), the French CNRS, the Kr?ller-M?ller Museum in Otterlo (Netherlands), the ESRF and DESY.

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) painted "Flowers in a blue vase" in 1887 in Paris, and in the early 20th century, the painting was acquired by the Kr?ller-M?ller Museum. The master usually did not varnish his works, but this painting was later covered with a supposedly protective varnish, like many other Van Gogh paintings in the first half of the 20th century. "A conservation treatment in 2009 revealed an unusual grey opaque crust on parts of the painting with cadmium yellow paint," says paintings conservator Margje Leeuwestein from the Kr?ller-M?ller Museum.

The cadmium yellow (cadmium sulphide, CdS) used by Van Gogh was a relatively new pigment, of which it has recently been discovered that in unvarnished paintings, it oxidises with air (to cadmium sulphate; CdSO4) making the pigments lose colour and luminosity. "We identified this process a few years ago, and the observation that instead of a slightly off-white, transparent oxidation layer, the pigments in this painting were covered with a dark, cracked crust intrigued us very much," says Janssens. "The removal of the orange-grey crust and discoloured varnish was not possible without affecting the very fragile original cadmium yellow paint on these parts," adds Leeuwestein.

Optical microscope image of one of the microsamples showing the bright yellow pigment at the bottom, and the orange-grey crust at the top. Credit G. Van der Snickt/University of Antwerp.

To identify what had happened, the museum took two microscopic paint samples -- each only a fraction of a millimetre in size -- from the original painting and sent them to Janssens for a detailed investigation. The scientists studied the samples using powerful X-ray beams at the ESRF and at DESY's PETRA III, revealing their chemical composition and internal structure at the interface between varnish and paint. To their surprise, they did not find the crystalline cadmium sulphate compounds that should have formed in the oxidation process. "It emerged that the sulphate anions had found a suitable reaction partner in lead ions from the varnish and had formed anglesite," explains DESY scientist Gerald Falkenberg. Anglesite (PbSO4) is an opaque compound that was found nearly everywhere throughout the varnish. "The source of the lead probably is a lead-based siccative that had been added to the varnish," adds Falkenberg.

"At the interface between paint and varnish, the cadmium ions together with degradation products from the varnish itself also formed a layer of cadmium oxalate," says ESRF scientist Marine Cotte. Together with the anglesite, the cadmium oxalate (CdC2O4) accounts for the opaque, orange-grey crust disfiguring parts of the painting on a macroscopic level.

After this discovery, conservators in many museums will have to newly address the question of restoring Van Gogh paintings. "This study on the deterioration of cadmium yellow is an excellent example of how collaboration between scientists and conservators can help to improve our understanding of the condition of Van Gogh's paintings and lead to better preservation of his works," says Ella Hendriks, Head of Conservation of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, who did not take part in the study. "Many of Van Gogh's French period paintings have been inappropriately varnished in the past and removal of these non-original varnish layers is one of the challenges facing conservators on a world-wide basis today. The type of information provided by Janssens and his team is vital to support the difficult decisions that conservators often have to make regarding such complex cleaning treatments."

"Once again, we find that paintings by Vincent van Gogh are not static entities for decades and centuries to come. Over a period of 100 years, they can actually be considered a fairly reactive cocktail of chemicals that behaves in unexpected manners," concludes Janssens. Geert van der Snickt adds that "especially the presence of sulphides puts the durability of the paintings at risk." In the next four years, Janssens' research group plans to study how museum indoor conditions and air pollution affect cadmium yellow and related sulphide-containing pigments used by artists.

Powell Ohio Real Estate Market Moves Under 3 Months Inventory ...

Powell, Ohio, real estate inventory has moved under three months of active inventory! The area saw a drop of 0.89 units over July?s numbers to 2.92 months of inventory.

The Powell area ? which encompasses an area from Clark Shaw Road to just north of I-270 and from U.S. 23 to essentially the Union County line with lots of little wiggles and cuts for Dublin and Ostrander in there ? saw 78 homes sell in August and currently has 225 active listings for an amazing 2.92 months of inventory. The sold market isn?t just moving them, it?s moving them fast with the average days on market down to 78 days.

The averge sales price is now $311,113, or $116.37 per square foot, which was 95.9 percent of the final listing price. The average home had 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 2,955 square feet under roof and had been listed for $324,280 when it went into contract. By comparison, the 225 active listings have 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and 3,625 square foot under roof and are listed at $476,399 or $155.28 per square foot adn have been on the market for 100 days.

Historically speaking, 78 homes is the most sold in a single-month in at least the last five years in Powell by 13 homes with 65 in May 2010 being the former high-water mark. However, the biggest reason for the drop in months of inventory is the drastic reduction in inventory. In August 2007 and 2008 there would be 450 homes for sale, in 2009 and 2010 there was 350, in 2011 there was 300, in 2012 it was all the way down to 214. This has created a ?problem? in the real estate market ? I?m calling it Selleritis ? in which buyers are still are still asking for the world while market stats attempt to tell sellers it is ?their? market.

In the condominium market, Powell continued to show low inventory rates and higher-than expected sales resulting only 3.5 months worth of inventory. Hence, for every seven condominiums on the market this month two will go into contract ? and with the current Central Ohio condominium market that?s a good number. In July there were 14 sold units average $221,468 or $101.26 per square foot (at a high of $153.58 and low of $55.56). The average sale was 2,221 sqare feet with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and had been on the market for 96 days. By comparison, there are currently 49 active condominiums in the Powell, Ohio, real estate market with an average price of $226,774 or an average price per foot of $122.75. The average square footage is 2,034 with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and has been on the market for 114 days.

The highest priced home in Powell is currently 13,330 square foot home priced ?to move? at $3,950,000 while the highest priced condominium is a 5,300 square foot condominium at $725,000.

All listing and sold information is from the Columbus Board of REALTORS and sold are from August 1 through August 30 as reported to the Columbus Board of REALTORS by September 13, 2012.

Police: Pa. woman offered roadside stripteases

UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) ? A southwestern Pennsylvania woman has been jailed on charges she was flagging down motorists and offering to take off her clothes for cash.

Online court records don't list an attorney for 35-year-old Jackie Hatter, of Uniontown. She remained jailed Wednesday unable to post $25,000 bond.

The Herald-Standard of Uniontown (http://bit.ly/QJggDe ) reports Hatter was arrested about 8:40 a.m. Sunday and charged with disorderly conduct and marijuana possession. Police say they were told she was stopping cars to offer the striptease at an intersection in the city about 40 miles south of Pittsburgh.

Police say Hatter was mumbling incoherently and fighting with officers.

A preliminary hearing on the charges has yet to be scheduled.

Green Blog: A Nun Is Appreciated, but Not for What She Intended

An 82-year-old pacifist nun facing felony charges for breaking into a Tennessee nuclear weapons plant was publicly thanked on Wednesday by conservative members of a House committee for exposing security flaws.

Representative Joe Barton, a Texas Republican had invited Sister Megan Gillespie Rice of Las Vegas to stand up and be recognized at the hearing, held by the House Energy and Commerce Committee?s subcommittee on oversight and investigations.

?That young lady there brought a holy bible,? he said, referring to the escapade on July 28 at the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant near Oak Ridge. ?If she had been a terrorist, the lord only knows what would have happened.??

Sister Rice and her two companions have been charged with felonies in connection with damage to the building. They said they were seeking to shut down the complex, which holds tons of nuclear bomb fuel, and they succeeded for a few days: the Energy Department conducted a ?stand-down? to improve security in following days.? Sister Rice asked if she could speak during the hearing and was told no.

The plant break-in occurred at a time when Congress was preparing to loosen the Energy Department?s regulation of contractors who operate much of the weapons complex. In May, the House passed a National Defense Authorization Act that included a provision that would decrease oversight by the department and delegate some responsibilities to the heads of the weapons plants and federal laboratories and the contractors themselves.

The bill passed the House on May 18; the Senate has not acted. Before the incident, critics of the Energy Department had focused mostly on the effect the provisions might have on environmental pollution and worker health, both of which have been problems for decades in the weapons complex.

In testimony on Wednesday, even Energy Department officials were unable to defend that provision. ?We have serious concerns,?? said Daniel B. Poneman, the deputy secretary of energy. The Energy Department?s contractors have been the main force behind the provisions.

While the extent of the security breakdown at Y-12 was detailed in a report by the agency?s inspector general last month, the hearing cast some new light on the department?s struggle to maintain vigilance. Some of the factors that led to the penetration by the three pacifists, which the department is now calling an ?incursion,? were cited as problems in a 2008 audit of security at the site, Mr. Poneman said. ?They were addressed in 2009, they put together the corrective actions, but then in 2010, 2011, we believe that they deteriorated,?? he said.

Sister Rice, speaking to reporters after the hearing, did not seem grateful for the Congressional recognition.? ?They?re just not addressing the root cause of the problem,?? which she views as the manufacture and maintenance of nuclear weapons, she said. As soon as the first nuclear device was exploded, on ?July 16, 1945,? she said, ?they all knew it should never have been used.??

She and her two companions, one of whom, Michael Walli, Sr., was also present in the hearing room, have a court date in February.

(AP) ? British writer Hilary Mantel was named one of six finalists for the prestigious Booker literary prize on Tuesday for "Bring up the Bodies," a tale of politics and passion at the court of King Henry VIII.

The novel is a sequel to "Wolf Hall," which won the 50,000 pound ($82,000) prize in 2009. The books follow the king's right-hand man, Thomas Cromwell, as he tries to keep his influence ? and his head ? in treacherous Tudor power circles.

Bookmakers immediately made Mantel one of the favorites to win the prize. Betting firm William Hill ranked her at 2/1, behind "Umbrella," a century-spanning stream of consciousness by Britain's Will Self.

The prize, which brings a big boost in publicity and sales for the winner, is open to writers from Britain, Ireland and the Commonwealth of former British colonies.

The finalists, selected from a 12-book long list, include novels set in post-World War II Asia ? "The Garden of Evening Mists," by Malaysia's Tan Twan Eng ? and Mumbai opium dens, in "Narcopolis" by India's Jeet Thayil.

Three books by British writers round out the list. They are Self's "Umbrella"; "Swimming Home," a portrait of the devastation wreaked by depression by South Africa-born Deborah Levy; and Alison Moore's "The Lighthouse," about a British man's life-changing holiday in Germany.

Founded in 1969, the Booker always brings a blaze of literary debate. Last year's jury, which gave the prize to Julian Barnes for "The Sense of an Ending," was accused of dumbing down after the chair of the panel said finalists had been chosen for "readability."

This year's list appears more adventurous. Only Mantel has been a finalist before and Self is a relentlessly modernist experimenter, while Tan, Levy and Moore are all published by small independent publishers.

Peter Stothard, editor of the Times Literary Supplement and head of the judging panel, said "the pure power of prose" had been the deciding factor in choosing the finalists.

"We loved the shock of language shown in so many different ways and were exhilarated by the vigor and vividly defined values in the six books that we chose," he said.

The award is officially known as the Man Booker Prize after its sponsor, financial services firm Man Group PLC. The winner will be announced Oct. 16.
